Register for The Brooks Republic Charity Run 2009
Proceeds will be used for providing Free Medical Healthcare to the Needy
This charity run is organized by a group of volunteers. All proceeds raised from this event will go to the Nam Hong Welfare Service Society, which is a registered charity managing a Free Medical Centre, serving mainly the aged and poor for the last 8 years. Currently, the Free Medical Centre is serving about 33,000 patients each year and that is expected to rise as many within the community are losing their jobs and finding hard to support their family members to seek medical treatments for complicated medical conditions. With fully utilized staff strength of 6 Physicians and 6 Support Staff, and rising cost of wages and Chinese medicine, the Welfare Service Society needs about $500,000/- to run the Free Medical Centre last year and that is expected to rise even further. This translates to $15 cost on each patient, and about $7 is used to cover the cost of doctors, and about $5 to cover the cost of medicine. The Free Medical Centre only charges patients $2 registration fees per visit. This means that the Welfare Service Society is subsidizing about $13 per patient. Providing this free medical service is critical for the community, especially the old and the needy, who finds it financially challenging to regularly visit commercial TCM centre to treat their painful ailments such as arthritis, and complicated conditions related to strokes & diabetes, which will require expensive and regular treatments such as acupuncture and physiotherapy.
The Welfare Service Society does not receive any funding from the Community Chest of Singapore and depends solely on contribution from the public and the community. Unlike most charities, the Nam Hong Welfare Service Society does not have a huge sinking fund. Currently, the Welfare Service Society’s bank deposits stands only at $120,000, sufficient to cover the cost only for the next 3 months. Hence, the Welfare Service Society has to constantly struggle to meet operational costs, and the committee members have to work really hard to raise funds just to cover cost for each coming month. More information about the charity and donation can be found at this website www.nhwelfare.org.
However, the committee members have never given up hope, and have decided to work even harder in the current difficult economic conditions to continue to provide free medical treatment to the old and needy. This is one of the key reasons the committee members has decided to raise funds through the Charity Run. It is only with the Charity Run that the Welfare Service Society can appeal to more organizations and people out of the community to contribute generously to us, all in the hope, that the Welfare Service Society can continue to provide free treatment to the needy and old.
